The Case of Paul McCartney: The Beatles, the Caddie, and the Ultimate Small Group

This is a case about the Beatles, with Paul McCartney under the microscope.

The Beatles are usually presented as four extraordinary musicians who somehow found one another at exactly the right moment. That is true, but it misses something potentially more useful.

They were also an extraordinary small group.

They spent years playing, rehearsing, writing, recording, arguing, listening, competing, and getting better beside one another. Their development did not occur inside four isolated brains. Each musician's improvement changed the environment in which the other three were learning. Then George Martin entered that environment, and later Geoff Emerick became another crucial part of it.

What emerged was not simply four talented musicians with a producer and an engineer. It was a compact cognitive ecosystem in which different people performed different functions while continually changing what everybody else could do.

Paul McCartney gives us an unusual opportunity to examine that system because MUSIC appears to have occupied an extraordinarily stable position in his life. Then history starts removing pieces. The Beatles disappear. Paul continues. Wings eventually disappears. Paul continues.

With McCartney II, he demonstrates that he can write, perform, experiment, record, and produce largely by himself.

Then Paul does something much more interesting than continuing to prove he can do everything alone.

He calls George Martin.

Before the Beatles Became THE BEATLES

Forget Beatlemania for a moment.

Before the stadiums, Sgt. Pepper, Apple Corps, and the rooftop, there was a small group of young musicians spending an almost absurd amount of time playing together.

Musicianship requires repetition. Songs have to be played again and again, chord changes have to become automatic, timing has to be internalized, and eventually a band learns how the other people in the room move before anybody has time to consciously think about it.

But the Beatles were not doing that repetitive skill acquisition alone. They were doing the repetitions together.

That changes the motivational architecture of practice. A musician playing the same passage for the hundredth time alone has to generate much of the engagement internally. Put several musicians in a room and the same repetition becomes socially dynamic: someone changes the feel, someone attacks a phrase differently, somebody makes a mistake, and someone else discovers something useful while responding to it.

The song may be the same song they played yesterday.

The experience is not the same experience.

That distinction may matter enormously for ADHD.

The Football Position Room

I began recognizing this architecture more clearly while looking at sports.

Consider an American football position group. An offensive lineman has to repeat footwork, hand placement, leverage, and blocking technique until movements become automatic. A receiver repeats releases and routes. A defensive back drills transitions and coverage technique.

Some of this is repetitive, mundane bullshit.

But the athlete usually isn't standing alone performing anonymous repetitions. He's surrounded by a handful of players working on the same craft, with a position coach watching all of them. The coach supplies immediate technical feedback, teammates provide body doubling simply by working beside one another, and everyone can observe everyone else's attempts.

Then competition enters.

The guy next to you isn't merely your body double. He's also trying to take your fucking job.

Suddenly repetition number 147 is not psychologically identical to repetition number 146. Your teammate just did it better.

Now you have another problem to solve.

Leapfrogging

One player executes the technique better. His teammate sees it, makes an adjustment, and perhaps improves on the next attempt. Now the first player has something new to observe.

They leapfrog.

Competition alone, however, isn't the most interesting part of this system. Good teammates do something seemingly contradictory: they help the person trying to beat them.

A player notices that his teammate's hand placement has improved and asks what he changed. Instead of protecting his advantage, the teammate explains it. The information moves. Now the second player doesn't have to independently rediscover something the first player already learned; he can begin with that information, modify it, and perhaps discover something better.

Then the information moves back.

A rival can motivate you to work harder. A good teammate can make you work harder while simultaneously helping you learn faster.

The better your teammate becomes, the better the problem he gives you to solve.

That is the accelerant.

And it gives us another way to look at John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Lennon and McCartney Were Creative Teammates

The Lennon-McCartney partnership is usually described as a songwriting collaboration. Of course it was, but that description may undersell what the relationship did to the development of the two people inside it.

John could bring Paul an unfinished idea. Paul could hear a possibility John had not heard. Paul could bring John something nearly complete and receive a line, chord, bridge, criticism, joke, or reaction that changed the song.

Sometimes they wrote closely together. Sometimes one contributed much more than the other. As the Beatles developed, they increasingly brought in songs that had been substantially written separately.

But they kept hearing one another's work.

Imagine being Paul McCartney and hearing what John Lennon has just written. The standard against which you experience your own work has changed. Then Paul arrives with something extraordinary, and now John's environment has changed.

Neither man has to consciously think, I have to beat him.

The creative benchmark has already moved.

They leapfrog.

A Soundboard Doesn't Have to Write the Song

This is why I prefer soundboard to a narrower idea of collaboration.

A soundboard does not have to supply the answer. Sometimes the reaction is the information. You play something for one of the best songwriters you know and he loves it; that tells you something. He looks unconvinced; that tells you something else. Then he plays you what he has been working on, and now the musical problem facing you has changed again.

The soundboard has altered the motivational environment without necessarily contributing a single note to your song.

When the soundboard does contribute something useful, development can accelerate further because you do not have to independently discover everything the other person already knows. This is what a good teammate does in the football position room.

And Lennon was not Paul's only teammate.

George Harrison Moves the Benchmark

George Harrison makes the small-group model more interesting because we can watch another member of the group develop inside it.

Early Beatles mythology naturally centers Lennon and McCartney because their songwriting partnership dominated the group's output. But George was learning in the same environment. His guitar playing evolved, his songwriting developed, and his exploration of Indian music introduced an entirely different musical vocabulary into the group.

Eventually he began bringing in songs capable of standing beside the strongest Lennon-McCartney material.

Now John and Paul weren't merely responding to one another. George was moving the benchmark too.

This is what happens in a strong position room. Someone who once followed begins pushing the people in front, the standard moves, and everybody has to respond.

The group leapfrogs.

Ringo Changes the Problem

Ringo Starr shows why this cannot be reduced to songwriting competition.

A rhythm section is not simply a mechanism for reproducing the songwriter's instructions. Feel matters. Timing matters. The drummer's choices alter what everybody else hears.

For Paul, that was particularly important because bass became one of his most distinctive instruments. His bass playing did not develop in isolation from Ringo's drumming; he was continuously responding to another musician's feel, choices, and timing.

Nobody has to stop rehearsal and announce that learning is taking place. The other person's performance is the information.

That may be one of the most powerful features of the small group. Learning can happen laterally and continuously while everybody is ostensibly working on something else.

The Beatles weren't attending a seminar on collaborative development.

They were playing.

Body Doubling Without Calling It Body Doubling

Nobody in Hamburg needed to announce that the band was now going to body double. They were simply working beside one another.

Presence changes work. Another person practicing can make practice easier to sustain, another person concentrating can stabilize engagement, and another person's improvement gives you something immediate to chase.

But the Beatles' environment contained another feature that ordinary body doubling does not necessarily provide: they needed one another.

If Paul disengaged, the band changed. If John disengaged, the band changed. If George or Ringo did not perform, everybody knew. Individual contribution remained visible.

That may be one reason small group matters. In a sufficiently large group, an individual can disappear. In a compact working group, everyone affects the outcome.

The work becomes consequential.

Then the Beatles acquired someone who occupied a very different position in the system.

George Martin Walks In

George Martin wasn't another Beatle. He wasn't competing with Paul for the bass part or John for the lead vocal. He stood partially outside the four-person peer group while remaining deeply committed to its success.

His historical job title was producer.

Functionally, another word becomes useful:

Caddie.

Dr. William Dodson has emphasized the importance of an advocate for people with ADHD: somebody on the person's side who can provide perspective and help navigate demands that do not always need to be carried alone.

Professional golf gives us a beautifully destigmatized version of the same basic architecture. The golfer has a caddie, and nobody thinks less of the golfer for having one.

The caddie does not hit the shot. The golfer retains agency and responsibility for performance. But the caddie carries contextual information, offers another perspective, listens while decisions are externalized, and sometimes challenges what the golfer is thinking.

Then the golfer decides.

George Martin could occupy a remarkably similar functional position for the Beatles.

But Martin did something else that becomes particularly important when we put Paul McCartney under the microscope.

He enlarged their musical map.

George Martin Could Show Them Roads They Hadn't Seen

The Beatles were extraordinarily sophisticated musical learners, but their education was largely experiential. They learned from records, instruments, performances, other musicians, and thousands of hours of playing.

Martin brought a different vocabulary into the room.

Geoff Emerick remembered Martin sitting at the piano with the Beatles and suggesting different chords and harmony parts they might not otherwise have considered. Emerick identified harmony and vocal work as particular strengths of Martin's and described musical ideas entering the Beatles' work through his guidance.

That is a profoundly important form of soundboarding.

The Beatles could know by ear that something worked without necessarily possessing the formal vocabulary to describe why. Martin could demonstrate another chord underneath the melody, suggest another harmony, or show them a route through a section that expanded the tonal possibilities available to them.

Over time, Beatles music became full of sophisticated harmonic movement. Songs could change tonal centers, major could acquire color from minor, and chords apparently outside the expected key could become emotional pivots. Berklee, for example, uses Beatles music when teaching modulation and modal interchange, including the changing tonal centers of “Penny Lane.”

The important claim is not that George Martin invented every modulation, modal interchange, borrowed chord, or harmonic surprise in a Beatles song. Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison possessed extraordinary ears and generated enormous harmonic sophistication themselves.

The developmental point is more interesting.

Paul spent years working beside a formally trained musician who could hear a harmonic possibility, demonstrate it immediately, explain it when useful, and extend the musical vocabulary already emerging from the band.

The Beatles heard the effect.

Then they owned another possibility.

The caddie was enlarging the course map.

When One Beatle Learns, the Group Learns

This matters for the small-group argument because new knowledge does not remain isolated in the person who first receives it.

Suppose Martin shows Paul a harmonic possibility Paul had not considered. Paul hears it and can now use some version of that idea elsewhere. John hears what Paul does. George hears both of them.

The knowledge has entered the small group.

That is another form of leapfrogging.

One person does not merely acquire a solution. Once that solution appears inside a collaborative environment, it changes what everybody else is capable of noticing.

“Penny Lane” provides a useful example of the larger phenomenon. Berklee's analysis describes verses moving through B major and B minor, choruses in A, and an eventual return to B. Whether the Beatles themselves described those movements using formal terminology while composing is almost beside the point.

The ear experiences the movement.

The musician remembers the effect.

The possibility becomes available next time.

Martin was not replacing the Beatles' ears with theory. He was giving their ears more territory to explore.

The Caddie Doesn't Swing

That distinction protects the Beatles' authorship.

The Beatles could arrive with an idea that exceeded their ability to describe technically, and Martin could listen. His background gave him access to orchestration, arrangement, harmony, recording, and the institutional machinery of EMI. He could receive an idea expressed in the Beatles' language and return possibilities in another language.

The Beatles still had to decide what belonged in the record.

Martin did not become the Beatles.

He expanded what the Beatles could see.

And the relationship could become more valuable as the band became more sophisticated.

That is important because ADHD scaffolding is too often imagined as something competence should eventually eliminate. The student receives support, improves, and then success is measured by removing the support.

Professional golf does not work that way. The golfer can become one of the finest players on Earth and still walk onto the course with a caddie.

Greater competence does not make a great soundboard irrelevant.

It can make the conversation more sophisticated.

The young Beatles gave George Martin problems. The mature Beatles gave him much more interesting ones.

Then Somebody Had to Make the Damn Thing Work

George Martin could help translate musical imagination. Somebody still had to make the recording equipment produce it.

That is where Geoff Emerick becomes important to the architecture.

Emerick became one of the Beatles' crucial recording engineers during Revolver, just as the band was pushing aggressively against the boundaries of conventional recording. “Tomorrow Never Knows” became one of the clearest examples: a largely modal musical foundation surrounded by tape loops, radically treated vocals, experimental recording techniques, and studio manipulations.

The Beatles could imagine something strange. Martin could help interpret the musical intention. Emerick confronted microphones, tape machines, signal paths, studio conventions, and the physical limitations of recording technology.

Emerick was the finisher.

The distinction matters. The caddie helps navigate the problem; the finisher converts the emerging solution into something that actually exists.

The Beatles could effectively say, We want this impossible sound.

Martin could help determine what they meant.

Emerick had to figure out how the hell to record it.

The System Starts Accelerating

By Revolver, something extraordinary had happened.

The Beatles were no longer simply getting better at playing songs. Their increasing expertise was generating new kinds of problems. Tape manipulation, unusual microphone techniques, Indian musical vocabulary, orchestration, unconventional harmony, and the recording studio itself could all become part of making a Beatles record.

Each successful experiment enlarged the solution space available for the next one.

That resembles the mechanism we saw in Stanley Kubrick: mastery does not merely solve problems. Mastery reveals more interesting problems.

But the Beatles add another variable.

They were discovering those problems together.

Suppose Paul discovers something useful about arrangement. John hears it, George interprets it differently, Ringo discovers what it does rhythmically, Martin sees another harmonic or orchestral possibility, and Emerick learns something new about capturing it.

One person's discovery has propagated through the system.

The next problem begins with everybody carrying slightly more information than they possessed before.

The small group isn't merely producing records. The small group is learning.

Now Put Paul Under the Microscope

This is where Paul McCartney becomes particularly useful.

The Beatles are the case. Paul is our longitudinal subject.

What appears to occupy the highest stable position in his hierarchy is remarkably simple:

MUSIC.

Not bass guitar, songwriting, rock and roll, or even the Beatles. Music is large enough to contain all of them.

That distinction matters because every narrower container eventually changes. The instrument changes, the style changes, collaborators change, recording technology changes, and eventually the group itself disappears.

Music doesn't.

That is why McCartney is such an interesting candidate for the Passion Singularity hypothesis.

MUSIC Gets Bigger

Paul doesn't simply become a better bass player inside the Beatles. He plays piano, guitar, and drums, becomes increasingly involved in arrangement and production, and learns to treat recording technology as another musical tool.

Harmonic possibilities become part of that expanding territory too.

This is where Martin's guidance becomes particularly important. A musician with Paul's ear does not need to sit through a conventional theory curriculum to absorb what another harmonic route sounds like. Martin can show it to him at a piano. Paul hears the emotional consequence immediately.

The knowledge enters MUSIC.

Later Paul doesn't need Martin standing beside him every time he changes tonal center, borrows a chord, or builds an arrangement.

The caddie has expanded the golfer's internal map.

That is what effective scaffolding should eventually do. It does not merely solve today's problem; it enlarges the person's available solutions for tomorrow.

Then the Beatles break.

The First Natural Experiment

Paul loses Lennon as his extraordinary creative rival and soundboard. Harrison and Starr cease to be permanent musical partners. George Martin is no longer continuously occupying the same place beside the group.

One of the most consequential small groups in popular music disappears.

Paul continues making music.

That matters because if THE BEATLES were Paul's organizing singularity, destruction of the Beatles should destroy the architecture. Instead, the container disappears while the higher-order domain survives.

Then Paul does something equally interesting.

He builds another small group.

Wings: Another Container Around MUSIC

Wings should not be understood simply as Paul attempting to manufacture Beatles II. Paul has described Wings as deliberately starting again at a much smaller scale, allowing the group to build itself rather than beginning as an instant superstar vehicle.

Linda provided one form of continuity. Other musicians came and went. But Denny Laine remained the enduring professional musical partner beside Paul and Linda through almost the entire life of Wings.

Denny's role doesn't fit neatly into one category. He was a bandmate and collaborator, making him a recurring musical soundboard, while his continuity through Wings' changing personnel gave him part of the stabilizing function that comes from a trusted long-term working relationship.

He was not George Martin.

He was caddie-lite.

Martin could stand farther outside the creative storm and provide the perspective that came with that distance. Denny was inside Wings playing the game with Paul, but he could listen, respond, play against Paul's ideas, and retain some of the larger musical history of what Wings had been trying to become.

Then Band on the Run gives us another useful experiment.

Band on the Run: What Can Paul Replace?

Immediately before the Lagos sessions, guitarist Henry McCullough and drummer Denny Seiwell left Wings. The group suddenly contracted to Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine.

McCartney's multi-instrumental ability meant losing a musician did not necessarily mean losing the ability to make the record. Paul could absorb much of the missing instrumental work himself.

Denny remained.

That does not prove Paul cognitively needed Denny. But it reveals something worth noticing: Paul could replace missing instrumental labor more easily than he could recreate a trusted musical relationship.

The surviving trio made Band on the Run, Wings continued, and Denny remained part of its center.

Why Caddie-Lite Matters

Denny's role also prevents us from making the caddie model artificially rigid.

Human relationships rarely fit one category perfectly. A person can be partly teammate, partly soundboard, partly stabilizer, and occasionally perform some of the functions we associate with an advocate.

What matters is not whether we can force everyone into a permanent category. What matters is what the environment collectively provides.

Wings did not recreate the Beatles' architecture perfectly.

It didn't need to.

It gave Paul another recurring social environment organized around MUSIC, with Denny providing a thread of continuity through most of it.

Then Wings disappeared too.

McCartney II: Strip Away the Group

In 1979, with Wings' future increasingly uncertain, Paul began experimenting with recording largely by himself.

The resulting McCartney II makes the next part of the argument unusually clean. Paul's official credits list him handling the instruments and voices, composing the material, and producing and engineering the record, with Linda contributing additional vocals and Eddie Klein providing technical assistance.

For the Passion Singularity hypothesis, this is enormously useful. The Beatles are gone, the stable Wings environment is disappearing, and Paul keeps making music.

He can do an astonishing amount of it himself.

If the question were whether Paul McCartney needed a permanent band in order to create music, McCartney II gives us a fairly decisive answer.

No.

That is precisely why what happens next matters so much.

Paul Can Carry His Own Bag

Our cultural fixation on independence can obscure the more interesting question.

If someone can perform a task alone, we tend to assume that doing it alone represents the highest level of mastery. Elite-performance environments routinely reject that assumption.

A golfer can read a green and still use a caddie. A football player understands his position and still has a position coach. A world-class musician can practice alone and still seek out other world-class musicians.

Self-sufficiency and optimization are different questions.

Paul had now demonstrated extraordinary self-sufficiency. He could write the material, play the instruments, experiment with the technology, and construct the record.

He could carry his own bag.

The question was whether carrying it alone was the best use of Paul McCartney.

The Beatles Had Taught Paul How to Use Other Minds

This may be one of the most important things Paul took away from the Beatles.

John could challenge him. George could surprise him. Ringo could change the feel underneath him. George Martin could show him harmonic and arranging possibilities he had not yet considered. Geoff Emerick could turn ideas into physical recorded sound.

Other people were not merely labor.

They were information.

Paul had spent years learning how to receive that information, reject what did not work, incorporate what did, and send the transformed idea back into the group.

That is an expertise in its own right.

And unlike the Beatles themselves, that expertise was portable.

Paul did not need to recreate John Lennon in order to benefit from another musical mind.

He needed to know which mind belonged in the room.

From Permanent Band to Modular Small Group

This may be the developmental transition that follows Wings.

The Beatles were a remarkably stable small group. Wings attempted another recurring band structure, with Denny Laine providing a crucial thread of continuity. After Wings, Paul no longer needed to construct Beatles III.

The architecture could become modular.

Different musicians could enter for different musical problems. One collaborator might be valuable for one song; another could transform another. The Passion Singularity remained stable while the human infrastructure reorganized around it.

MUSIC remained the center.

That is a more sophisticated form of scaffolding than simply finding another permanent band. The young musician joins whatever group will have him; the experienced musician learns who should be in the room.

After McCartney II, Paul chose somebody extremely familiar.

Paul Calls George Martin

This is where the story begins moving toward its final downbeat.

After McCartney II, with Wings' split confirmed, Paul's next solo album was Tug of War. Paul's official history describes the album explicitly as a reunion with George Martin, and another McCartney archive account notes that it marked the first time Paul had worked with Martin as producer since the Beatles' Abbey Road.

Consider what has happened before interpreting that decision.

Paul survived the Beatles breakup, built Wings, continued through its personnel changes with Denny Laine as an enduring musical partner, and then demonstrated that he could make a record largely by himself.

Then he called George Martin.

Not because Paul had forgotten how to make music, couldn't play the instruments, or had run out of ideas.

The golfer wanted the full caddie back.

And this was not merely an old producer returning for nostalgia.

This was one of the people who had helped enlarge Paul's musical map in the first place.

The Old Caddie Meets a Much Better Golfer

The Paul McCartney returning to George Martin in the early 1980s was not the young bassist Martin had first encountered twenty years earlier.

Paul had written hundreds of songs, produced himself, fronted two enormously successful groups, and developed a formidable command of studio technology, arrangement, harmony, instrumentation, and record-making.

The golfer had become vastly better.

That made the caddie more interesting, not less.

Paul later described Martin with an affectionate metaphor: an “old shoe”—comfortable and familiar to work with—while immediately emphasizing that Martin remained one of the best producers in the world.

That is what a trusted high-level soundboard can become.

You don't need to spend cognitive resources explaining every assumption because the other person already knows the landscape.

Now both of you can work on the problem.

New Soundboards

Martin did not return to an empty studio.

The Tug of War sessions surrounded Paul with extraordinary musicians including Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clarke, Steve Gadd, Carl Perkins, Ringo Starr, Eric Stewart, and Denny Laine. George Martin produced, while McCartney and Martin shared arrangement credit.

These were not musicians Paul required because he was incapable of playing their instruments.

Their value was almost the opposite.

They weren't Paul McCartney.

Each brought another musical model into the room. Stevie Wonder carried an entire musical universe Paul could interact with; Stanley Clarke heard bass through another extraordinary set of ears; Steve Gadd brought a different rhythmic intelligence; Carl Perkins brought a musical lineage Paul had loved since adolescence.

Paul could play against them, and they could play against Paul.

The soundboards had become modular.

The Beatles could never be reconstructed.

They didn't need to be.

And Geoff Emerick Comes Back

Then the architecture produces one final echo.

George Martin produced Tug of War. McCartney and Martin handled the arrangements. Geoff Emerick engineered the album.

The finisher came back too.

Nobody was pretending the Beatles had returned. John was gone, George Harrison was not part of this working unit, and Ringo's appearance did not transform it into a reunion.

But the architecture was recognizable.

Paul remained organized around MUSIC while elite musicians supplied changing soundboards. George Martin returned to the caddie position, and Geoff Emerick once again helped turn the developing musical object into finished recorded sound.

The people had changed. The architecture survived.

The Ultimate Small Group

That is why the Beatles matter beyond music history.

They give us an unusually visible example of what a high-performance small group can do. A good small group provides social presence without the anonymity of a crowd, makes individual contributions consequential while allowing feedback to move quickly, and can contain cooperation and competition simultaneously.

Good teammates add something crucial: they accelerate the leapfrogging.

The person who just beat you helps you understand how he did it. You incorporate that information, discover something new, and feed it back.

Now the benchmark moves again.

That is not merely competition.

It is collaborative development.

George Martin adds another layer. A strong small group does not merely need peers; sometimes it benefits from someone standing partially outside the competition who carries a broader map and possesses knowledge the participants have not yet acquired.

The caddie does not merely help you execute the shot.

Sometimes he shows you a shot you didn't know existed.

Why This May Matter for ADHD

ADHD discussions frequently focus on whether someone can tolerate repetitive practice.

That may be the wrong question.

Expertise requires repetition. Football players cannot eliminate drills, golfers cannot eliminate practice, and musicians cannot eliminate rehearsals, mistakes, retakes, and the hundredth attempt at something that still isn't quite right.

The repetition remains.

The environment surrounding it can change completely.

Put the repetition inside a small group and social presence enters. Add a coach or caddie and immediate feedback enters. Add peers working on the same craft and comparison enters. If those peers are good teammates, useful information begins moving laterally through the group.

And if the caddie possesses knowledge beyond the group's existing map, the environment can teach the group what it doesn't yet know to look for.

The hundredth repetition is technically still the hundredth repetition.

Psychologically, it may be a completely different event.

Someone else just changed the problem.

The Small Group as an ADHD Engagement Engine

That gives us a more precise hypothesis than simply saying ADHDers like groups.

Large groups can be distracting, anonymous, overstimulating, socially exhausting, or easy to disappear inside. The interesting environment is a small, consequential group in which individual contributions remain visible and the other members are actively engaged in related problems.

The football position room works that way. So does the professional golf practice group. So did the Beatles.

The work remains repetitive enough to produce mastery, but the social environment continually introduces feedback, novelty, challenge, comparison, information, and the possibility of leapfrogging.

The craft repeats. The problem keeps moving.

That may be exactly what allows some interest-driven brains to tolerate enough repetition to become extraordinarily good.

And unlike a retrospective celebrity diagnosis, this is something researchers could actually test.

Paul Is the Natural Experiment

That brings us back to Paul McCartney.

The Beatles supplied an extraordinary developmental small group. Lennon, Harrison, and Starr supplied different forms of soundboarding, feedback, competition, and musical information. George Martin supplied something closer to the caddie: perspective, translation, formal musical knowledge, and access to possibilities the young Beatles had not yet incorporated. Geoff Emerick increasingly supplied the technical finishing intelligence needed to turn extraordinary ideas into physical records.

Paul developed inside that environment while MUSIC expanded to absorb songwriting, performance, instruments, arrangement, harmony, production, and recording.

Then the Beatles disappeared. Paul built Wings, with Denny Laine becoming a trusted musical partner and something approaching caddie-lite through the group's changing personnel. Then Wings disappeared, and Paul made McCartney II.

The experiment had reached its most stripped-down condition.

Paul McCartney could work alone.

That was never really in doubt.

The interesting evidence comes afterward.

Once Paul had demonstrated that independence, he did not spend the next stage of his career proving it again. He surrounded himself with exceptional musicians, brought back Geoff Emerick, and most revealingly returned to the person who had spent the Beatles years not merely recording his ideas, but sometimes showing him musical roads he had not yet traveled.

The Caddie Comes Back

We often imagine expertise as a progression toward needing fewer people.

The Beatles suggest another trajectory.

A developing person may initially work with whoever happens to be nearby. An expert learns which people make him better.

Paul no longer needed John Lennon beside him to prove he could write a song. He didn't need Ringo to prove he could play drums. He didn't need George Martin to teach him that songs could move through unexpected harmonic territory.

He already knew.

That is precisely what good scaffolding is supposed to accomplish. The lesson becomes yours, but that does not make the person who helped expand your map worthless.

It changes the conversation you can now have with him.

Doing something by yourself can demonstrate independence.

It does not necessarily demonstrate optimal performance.

Paul had already proven that he could carry the bag. He had nothing left to prove by carrying it.

So after the Beatles were gone, after Wings was gone, and after McCartney II demonstrated just how much Paul McCartney could accomplish largely inside his own musical world, he did not retreat further into independence.

He rebuilt the human architecture around MUSIC.

The permanent band gave way to changing soundboards. The finisher returned. And finally, so did the man who had once sat at a piano beside four young musicians and shown them that there were more roads through a song than they yet knew existed.

Paul called George Martin.

That is where the case ends.


Epistemic Note

The Passion Singularityleapfrogging, and small-group-as-accelerant models developed here are hypotheses, not established ADHD clinical constructs. The caddie is a functional analogy for the advocate/scaffolding role rather than a claim that a music producer, sports caddie, position coach, and ADHD advocate perform identical jobs.

This case also does not depend upon retrospectively diagnosing the Beatles. They lived through an era in which adult ADHD was poorly recognized, making absence of diagnosis weak historical evidence either way. The relevant question here is behavioral and environmental: what happens when repetitive mastery occurs inside a small group that continually supplies social presence, feedback, novelty, soundboarding, competition, and access to expertise?

The prediction is testable. Repetitive skill acquisition should differ when the same practice occurs alone versus inside a small, consequential group with immediate feedback and reciprocal peer interaction. If the leapfrogging hypothesis is correct, cooperative competitors should provide an additional advantage because useful discoveries propagate between participants rather than having to be independently rediscovered.

The Beatles give us an extraordinary naturalistic case. Paul McCartney gives us something rarer: the opportunity to watch the small group disappear while the higher-order passion remains.

Then he gives us the most interesting choice of all.

After proving he could work alone, he chose the people who made him better.
